Jarvis Church
Grammy Award-winning artist Jarvis Church, also known as Gerald Eaton, rose to fame as the lead vocalist for The Philosopher Kings, a 90s R&B band known for its soulful hits. Eaton co-founded the group with Brian West, eventually signing with Sony Music Canada in 1993. The band's self-titled debut album achieved gold status and produced the Top 10 single "Charms," followed by a platinum album and more hit singles.
Apart from his work with The Philosopher Kings, Eaton has been a prominent producer, notably as one-half of the production team behind Nelly Furtado's early successes. His production work earned him a Grammy nomination in 2002 and numerous Juno Awards, solidifying his reputation in the Canadian music scene. In 2002, Eaton launched his solo career as Jarvis Church, named after two Toronto streets, with the release of his debut album, *Shake It Off*.
Originally from Jamaica, Eaton moved to Canada at age eight. His early exposure to music was shaped by witnessing Bob Marley’s iconic One Love concert in Kingston in 1977, which left a profound impact on his view of music's power to unify. Inspired by Marley, Eaton began playing in various bands at age 13, setting the stage for his dynamic career.
Now, Jarvis Church brings his signature blend of R&B and soul back to the stage. He will perform a mix of hits from The Philosopher Kings, his solo work, and classic covers from legends like Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, and Sam Cooke at the John Saunders Centre on February 8th, 2025.
